Additional Information

Protects against:
Chickenpox (Varicella-Zoster Virus – VZV): Highly contagious viral infection causing itchy blister-like rash, fever, fatigue, headache, skin infection, pneumonia, encephalitis (rare), and severe disease in infants, adults, and immunocompromised individuals.

Who should get it:

Children (Primary Group):

  • All children 12 months and older

Also recommended for:

  • Adolescents and adults who never had chickenpox or vaccination
  • Healthcare workers without immunity
  • Household contacts of immunocompromised individuals
  • People at higher risk of exposure (teachers, caregivers)

Schedule:

2-dose series:

  • Dose 1: 12–15 months of age
  • Dose 2: 4–6 years of age

Catch-up schedule:

  • If ≥13 years: 2 doses at least 4 weeks apart

Why vaccinate:

  • Chickenpox spreads easily through airborne droplets and direct contact
  • Protects against severe disease and hospitalization
  • Reduces risk of secondary bacterial skin infections
  • Over 90–95% effective after two doses
  • Provides long-term protection
  • Helps reduce future risk of Herpes Zoster (shingles)

Important note:
The varicella vaccine is safe and well tolerated, with mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site or mild rash in a small number of children. Two doses provide the best protection and are recommended for long-term immunity.
