Additional Information

Protects against:
Rabies: A deadly viral infection affecting the brain and nervous system, transmitted through the bite or saliva of infected animals (especially dogs). Symptoms include fever, agitation, confusion, difficulty swallowing, paralysis, and almost always death once symptoms appear.

Who should get it:

Post-Exposure (after animal bite or scratch):

  • Anyone bitten or scratched by a suspected rabid animal
  • People exposed to saliva of potentially infected animals through open wounds or mucous membranes

Pre-Exposure (high-risk groups):

  • Veterinarians and animal handlers
  • Laboratory workers handling rabies virus
  • Travelers to high-risk regions
  • Children in areas with high dog bite risk

Schedule:

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP):

  • Dose 1: Day 0 (as soon as possible after exposure)
  • Dose 2: Day 3
  • Dose 3: Day 7
  • Dose 4: Day 14
(Rabies Immunoglobulin may also be required for severe exposures)

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis:

  • 3 doses: Day 0, Day 7, Day 21 or 28

Why vaccinate:

  • Rabies is almost 100% fatal once symptoms develop
  • Vaccine given after exposure can completely prevent the disease
  • Essential for dog bites and animal exposure

Important note:
Rabies vaccination should be started immediately after any suspected rabid animal bite or scratch. The wound must be washed thoroughly with soap and water, and medical care should be sought urgently. Early vaccination is life-saving.
